Environment
In order to ensure a sound environment for future generations, it is crucial that action be taken to further the progress toward a "greener" tomorrow. Biofuels are better for our environment than the crude oil alternative. Regardless of one's position on climate change, it is clear that the burning of fossil fuels must be minimized. Biofuels including ethanol are already helping do just that.
In a recent study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology, corn-based ethanol was found to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 50 percent over regular unleaded gasoline. Cellulosic ethanol is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 87 percent. These numbers continue to grow for ethanol as technology advances while oil extraction becomes more challenging and energy intensive. And unlike oil, ethanol from any source has a positive net energy balance - meaning it delivers more energy than is invested in producing it.
Today, ethanol is replacing millions of barrels of imported petroleum. That's petroleum that could have ended up as smog in our environment, further damaging ecosystems and communities. Ethanol is clean-burning, renewable, and it is grown in America.
